As quickly as you can say ‘Australia is out of the World Cup’, it’s time for another Capytech newsletter! Ramadan and Eid have come and gone, and for those of you based here in the Middle East, I hope it was time well spent with loved ones.

People often talk about Ramadan and the summer as being slower periods out here. So far this hasn’t really proven the case for us. It may be the efforts from earlier in the year paying off, but our development team are as busy as they’ve ever been (which is wonderful of course!).

So no big announcements this month or big news. We’re very much in a development and maintenance phase as we’re finalising one lot of projects and getting right stuck into another set. Summer should see us finish out some work that has been ongoing and get really close to delivering some exciting new e-learning - not much more I can ask for!

I also wanted to let you know that our newsletter will be taking a break during the summer months here in Dubai. We’ll keep posting great articles and so on for you to read, and you can always see us on our social channels though. I look forward to writing to you again in a couple of months!

App of the Month - Overcast

This has to be the most used app on my phone! I listen to podcasts whilst driving, doing the dishes, walking to meetings and in almost any ‘dead time’. I love this app as it makes it very easy to find and subscribe to my favourite podcast (if you want to know what they are, just ask!).

Besides a great interface, Overcast has some magic sauce baked in. It allows you to speed up the playback of podcasts allowing you to get through even  more every day. A lot of players might have this feature, but this one does it intelligently. It will cut out any silences between words and sentences to further increase playback speed along with enhancing the voice so you can easily listen.

I’ll often find myself listening at 2 or 3x the normal speed. It might take some getting use to (and sometimes I’ll slow it down if they are talking particularly fast, or it’s dense content) but by speeding it up it makes sure I stay focused on the podcast. If I were listening to it at normal speed, my mind will quickly wander and I wouldn’t take anything in.

Overcast is freely available on iPhone (I’m sure there’s something similar for Android sorry), although I pay to unlock more features. If you’re sick of your current player, or want to try out listening to more podcasts - I recommend you give it a try!
